AI, LLMs, infrastructure, homelab and physics

Who I am

I have worked in IT for more than 25 years, across software development, Linux systems, data centers, networking and databases. I have been a developer, a systems engineer, a DBA and a CTO. I live in Catanzaro, in Calabria.

I started programming at about ten, on a Texas Instruments TI-99/4A connected to a black and white TV. My father taught computer science, and we had a computer at home when that was still uncommon in Italy, in the era of green and orange phosphor monitors and 5.25" floppy disks. I also studied the 8086 architecture and wrote assembly to change the graphics mode and to write directly to memory. I still start from code: I write some every week, now mostly in Python.

This site is personal. It is where I put what I learn by trying things on my own machines, and I write about topics close to my work, such as AI and infrastructure, but not about what happens inside my company.

What I write about

  • AI, LLMs and infrastructure. How models work, how they are served and used, the infrastructure that runs them, and the tools I build and publish on GitHub.
  • Homelab. Proxmox, ComfyUI and self-hosting. This site runs on one of my own servers.
  • Physics. I like it, and now and then I build theories starting from concrete things I can measure or see.
  • Diagrams. Technical schemes that explain a new technology in a way you can remember.
  • Digressions. Whatever else catches my attention.

Path

  1. 2023 – today

    Infrastructure architect

    AI and cloud-native platforms

I design infrastructure solutions and guide the teams that adopt them.

  2. 2015 – 2023

    CTO and Technical Director

    Calcom S.r.l.

I led the technical teams of an IT company working with hospitals, municipalities and universities: server and storage infrastructure, cybersecurity, networking, VoIP, data warehousing and custom software, mostly on open-source components. I wrote the technical offers, including for public tenders, and stayed hands-on as systems engineer, DBA, network engineer and developer.

  3. 2010 – 2015

    Senior Linux systems engineer

    Engineering Ingegneria Informatica, Vitrociset

Operations of a regional data center: blade infrastructure, physical and virtual servers, Oracle clusters, SAN storage, monitoring and networking. SOA integrations and development in Perl, Bash, Python and Java.

  4. 2008 – 2010

    Partner, systems engineer and developer

    Blue Hat

Co-owner of a small IT company working on software development, systems engineering, VoIP telephony and video surveillance. I also taught Linux and web development courses.

  5. 2002 – 2008

    Analyst-programmer and junior Oracle DBA

    Naos Evolutions, Offnet

Systems for telephone call centers: trouble ticketing, single sign-on, IVR and CDR monitoring, query optimization on Oracle with millions of records.

Open source

I proposed a fix for a LiteLLM bug in the Responses API, where streaming dropped tool-call events (PR #31220).
